Baptism

img-baptism

The Sacrament of Baptism is the first Sacrament of Initiation. It involves ritual washing with water. Water is commonly known as a symbol of life and cleansing – that’s what it means in Baptism too. Water is poured over a person’s head (or the person can be immersed in water). This action is a symbol of washing away Original Sin, rising to new life in Christ and marks the beginning of a person’s participation in the mission of the Church. The second Sacrament of Initiation is Confirmation and is the sacrament which ‘seals’ or ‘reaffirms’ our Baptism before we take the final step in becoming a full member of the Catholic Church – sharing in Holy Communion (the third Sacrament of Initiation).

The Baptism of an infant is the beginning of a child’s faith life and journey with the Christian community.  It is therefore an important decision for parents to make on behalf of their child. For a child to be baptised a Catholic, is it essential that one parent is a Catholic and that both parents agree to nurture the faith life of the child as much as possible. It is also essential that Godparents are baptised Christians, one being a Catholic.

For Baptism of children seven years or over, please contact the office.

Baptismal Preparation is on the first Sunday of the month at 10.00 a.m.

Baptism of infants is celebrated every second and fourth Sunday mornings after 9.00 a.m. Mass.
